Our Founder | Dirk van der Walt
With a foundation in engineering & over 20 years of experience in the industry, I’ve developed a deep appreciation for the power of data & technology in solving complex challenges. Alongside my professional journey, I’ve maintained a personal passion for nature and wildlife, inspired by the rich biodiversity around us. I see an opportunity to merge these two worlds, using data science and technology to make a tangible impact in environmental conservation. This vision led to the creation of Roc Conservation Tech—a company dedicated to bridging the gap between industry and conservation. By leveraging data-driven insights and innovative technology, we aim to support sustainable growth while safeguarding our natural ecosystems.
Identiflight
IdentiFlight® is the industry-leading technology in detecting and identifying species of interest in wind farms. IdentiFlight’s technology combines high-performance optical systems with proprietary machine vision and artificial intelligence software. The IdentiFlight system has completed multi-year independent validation and has been deployed at projects internationally since 2018.. The system provides informed curtailment to specific turbines to reduce energy loss.
For wind projects in development, IdentiFlight accurately quantifies bird activity at prospective sites. The species abundance data gathered by these IdentiFlight study units assists with the permitting and approval process.
